Newton Abbot CIC

Working Together – Supporting Our Communities

Newton Abbot Community Interest Company was formed more than 10 years ago following completion of the Newton Abbot & District Community Plan in 2008. The CIC is a social enterprise that seeks to improve the quality of life for all those living or working in Newton Abbot. We have a remit across the town and are involved in a variety of activities and projects.

Our vision is that Newton Abbot should be a town where residents are involved in making it a community they are proud of.

Our purpose is two-fold:

We listen:

  • Residents play an active role in their community by responding to consultations
  • The voice of minority groups is heard
  • Residents feel involved in debate about the future of their community

We deliver:

  • Our actions in the community reflects the needs and wishes of residents
  • Projects initiated by community/residents are supported and implemented
  • Residents recognise that they can make a difference through volunteering
  • Residents play an active role and become involved in their community

The CIC’s initial purpose was to deliver the projects and priorities in the Community Plan, although our activities have broadened over the last 30 years. You can download the full Community Plan here or the Executive summary here.

Newton Abbot CIC has a Board of Directors who are all volunteers. They receive no salary or allowance for their involvement. All the Directors live or work within the Newton Abbot area. They have a mix of skills and abilities to lead and support the development of Newton Abbot CIC and its activities.

The Current Directors are Lynn McElheron (Chair), John Pike (Vice Chair), Cllr Carol Bunday (Newton Abbot Town Council representative),  Jackie Hook, John Addy, and Rosemary Roscoe. The CIC is an apolitical organisation and Directors represent the interests of the CIC and the local community not the interests of their political party.

Newton Abbot CIC employs a Business & Community Development Manager who leads on project development, applications for grant funding and project delivery. The CIC also employs a Centre Manager who manages The Buckland Centre and The Courtenay Centre in Newton Abbot. Staff are also employed to support the the running of both Centres, including Cleaners and Youth Workers. For bookings at Courtenay Centre, you can go to: www.courtenaycentre.co.uk. Terms of hire for the centre can be viewed here.

We work with a wide variety of local partners from the public, private and voluntary sectors.

Newton Abbot Community Interest Company is not involved in the planning or delivery of new homes within Newton Abbot and recognise that this role sits with the local planning authority. However, the CIC takes a keen interest in ensuring that the concept of community and the delivery of infrastructure is properly addressed in all new areas of housing within the town. This includes carrying out consultation with new residents to canvas views and opinions, supporting fledgling residents’ groups and working with developers and the local planning authority to lobby for the provision of appropriate infrastructure and/or community facilities. Our emphasis is on working with other organisations within the town to ensure that in the long-term these communities are supported to become sustainable neighbourhoods.
