Newton Abbot CIC has been over-whelmed by the response to our Poppies at Penn Inn Project. Together with Transition Newton Abbot, the CIC created a meadow of crafted poppies under the flyover at Penn Inn Roundabout. Despite the terrible weather over the weekend, the majority of the display lasted the weekend.
A cherry tree was also planted by Richard Underhill MBE, Chairman of the Newton Abbot Branch of the Royal British Legion and pupils from Haytor View Primary School to mark the centenary.
Haytor View Primary School involved the whole School in the poppy making, with more than 200 poppies made from a variety of materials. The School held a short act of Remembrance on the roundabout led by Father Nick Debney, Team Vicar in Newton Abbot. Some of the pupils were also involved in planting bulb and seed planting at the roundabout.
Emily Farrell the CIC’s Business Manager commented that “we have been overwhelmed by the positive response we have received to out Poppies at Penn Inn Project. It is great that so many people of all ages had the opportunity to get involved by making their own personal tribute. We are grateful to Council Gordon Hook, Councillor Gordon Hook and Miller Energy for their support for the Project.
The purpose of the event was to mark the centenary of the end of World War One, but also highlight the value of the green area inside the roundabout as a community space and an important routeway between the town and the Buckland/Milber areas.
The Project is part of an on-going programme of improvements to the roundabout. The CIC plans to plant more than 20 trees over the autumn/winter season together with several hundred bulbs. The works have been funded by local Councillors, the Cooperative Bank, Teign Housing Community Chest and private donations.
