Current Activities

Our current activities include:

The Buckland Centre

Newton Abbot CIC holds the leases for The Buckland Centre from Teignbridge District Council. The CIC manages the building on behalf of the local community. The centre offers a variety of social and educational activities as well as rooms for hire.

The CIC  regularly raises the funds to make improvements to the centre.

The Courtenay Centre

Newton Abbot CIC took over the management of the building in February 2020, at the start of the first national lockdown. The CIC works alongside the Newton Abbot Centre Association who hold the lease for the centre. The Courtenay Centre offers rooms for private hire and hosts a variety of recreational, social, and educational groups. No Limits Community Cafe rents space at the centre on a flexible basis when they need more space.

The CIC employs a Centre Manager who manages both The Courtenay and The Buckland Centre.

During 2021 a number of improvements were carried out at The Courtenay Centre, including extensive health and safety works.

We have funded and opened the Newton Abbot Community Fridge which collects waste food from local food retailers. The food is then made available to members of the public free of charge. This is a food waste initiative, not a food poverty project, so it does not conflict with the Foodbanks, who we work closely with.

Buckland Hub

Newton Abbot CIC secured National Lottery Reaching Communities funding of £190, 008 to fund advice and support services for the Buckland community over the next four years. This provides a weekly advice service based at The Buckland Centre, as well as a variety of groups and activities for the local community. The funding also pays for Coordinators to work one-to-one with households and families in the Buckland community.

The Base Youth Club

Newton Abbot CIC manages The Base Youth club which is based at The Buckland Centre. To do this, the CIC employs three part-time youth workers. The Base Youth Club provides a Junior Club for young people age 7-end of year 6, and a Senior Club for young people age 11-14. The Junior club is open on a Friday evening and the Senior club on a Wednesday evening. Both operate in term time only.

Newton Abbot Gardening

Newton Abbot CIC has carried our various gardening activities around the town. Together with a team of local volunteers we have completed the renovation of the central area of Penn Inn roundabout, have refurbished the planters outside the law courts, and are now working at Ball’s Corner. Further gardening work is planned at various locations around the town.

Art in Subways

Following the success of our gardening project at Penn Inn, we have secured funding from Teignbridge District Council to develop an ‘Art in the Subways’ Project around Newton Abbot. We’ll be working with local people and local artists to design murals and other artwork for key subways – including the subway by the Asda Supermarket and the subways under Penn Inn roundabout.
